Honoring Memorial Day in Salisbury
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer—school is out, the days are longer, and many enjoy a well-deserved day off. It’s a chance to relax, gather with friends, and enjoy the outdoors.
But it's also a day of remembrance.
In Salisbury, the Rotary Honor Concourse at City Park, beside the tennis courts, is a place where the meaning of the day comes into sharp focus. Flags wave above marble memorials bearing the names of local service members who gave their lives in wars from World War I through Vietnam.
This peaceful walking area was the vision of Reid Leonard, a beloved Salisbury resident who passed away in 2023 at age 96. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent decades giving back to the community through service, leadership, and love for this country.
His legacy includes this moving memorial—a space that invites reflection, honors sacrifice, and teaches history.
