What's Happening: The Two-Year Extension

You may remember that last November, President Trump signed legislation that would effectively ban most hemp THC products starting November 13, 2026—just nine months away. That ban would force businesses like ours to close and eliminate your access to products that have become part of your wellness routine.

But there's hope. On January 12th, Representative Jim Baird of Indiana introduced the Hemp Planting Predictability Act (H.R. 7024), a bipartisan bill that would delay the ban by two full years, pushing the implementation date to November 2028.

Why This Matters

This isn't just about buying time. The two-year extension would allow Congress, farmers, and businesses to work together on sensible regulations that protect consumers while preserving a legal industry that millions of Americans depend on. The current ban was rushed through as part of a larger spending bill, without the careful consideration such a major policy change deserves.

The Baird Bill has attracted bipartisan support, with cosponsors from both parties recognizing that the hemp industry—worth billions and employing thousands—deserves more than a hasty shutdown. Major industry groups like the U.S. Hemp Roundtable and even large retailers are backing this extension.

What the Current Ban Would Do

  • Extreme THC limits: Products would be restricted to just 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container—a limit so low it would eliminate virtually all current hemp products
  • Devastating impact across the board: This ban would eliminate access to naturally occurring cannabinoids like delta-8, devastate the CBD market (since many CBD products contain trace amounts of THC), and make hemp an economically unviable crop for farmers who depend on it
  • Business closures: Dispensaries, processors, and farms across the country would be forced to shut down
  • Lost access: Customers who rely on these products for wellness, sleep, pain relief, and stress management would lose legal access
