.03%? Why?
Let's be clear. Delta-9 THC (marijuana) is illegal in North Carolina and we do not sell it.
That said, it's a close cousin to CBD and Delta 8 THC.
Cannabis plants have over a hundred different cannabinoids, and different cannabinoids are more prominent in different strains.ย
According to the 2018 Farm Bill, a plant is considered marijuana if the Delta-9 THC content is greater than .03%. If it contains less than .03%, then it is hemp.
Before the .03% distinction, hemp and marijuana were more likely to be distinguished by their look. Marijuana plants had more flowers. Hemp plants were grown for their materials, and they were stalky.
But CBD also comes from the flower, so all the plants grown for consumption are flowery plants now. And they are bred to produce a variety of cannabinoid levels -- mostly THC and CBD.
There's nothing magic about .03%. This is an arbitrary number that says more about outdated laws than about the medical benefits available in the cannabis plant.
But it is the law and farmers must comply or lose the crop.
When more research is done, we'll certainly have more specific information available about what ratios of cannabinoids benefit which ailments.
One day in the future, we will likely have federal and state legalization.
At that point, .03% will become irrelevant. There will still be a demand for products that contain less than .03% THC, and zero percent -- but there will be more choices and customers will be able to make decisions about cannabinoid ratios with their well being in mind.
